The console was designed to resemble a video cassette recorder to appeal to retailers and help revitalize the American video game industry after the crash of 1983. The Control Deck bundle included the console and two controllers. The design of the NES controller, with its directional pad and two buttons, became the standard for many future gaming controllers. The NES was a global success, selling over 60 million units worldwide.
