All consoles except for the Nintendo Switch need a "Portal of Power" to connect your Skylanders to 1 of the 6 amazing Skylanders games specially suitable for young children.
Nintendo DS users need a mini wireless portal (like the one I am standing on) and games can only see portals and figures backwards compatible (so Spyro's Adventure or Giants games need an older portal and Skylander Characters, whereas the newer Superchargers or Imaginators games can use any portal or Skylanders in the game
